<\/div>ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n

The five-year study programme of Composition has been thought at the Academy of Music since 1921. Prominent composers such as Blagoje Bersa, Krsto Odak, Franjo Dugan, Milo Cipra, Boris Papandopulo, Stanko Horvat, Milko Kelemen, Stjepan \u0160ulek and many others have worked at the Department, and taught a number of distinguished composers in their classes. The Department has thus been internationally recognized as a centre of excellence in the field of composition and music theory.<\/p>\n

<\/div>ABOUT THE STUDY PROGRAMMES<\/strong><\/p>\n

Composition<\/strong><\/em> (Tracks: Composition, Applied Composition, Electronic Composition)<\/em><\/p>\n

The Integrated Undergraduate and Graduate University Study of Composition,<\/em> with the subjects of The Basics of<\/em> Composition<\/em>, Composition with Instrumentation<\/em> (Composition module), Applied Composition<\/em> (Applied Composition module) and Electronic Composition <\/em>and Techniques of Electronic Music<\/em> (Electronic Composition module), provide students with the knowledge and skills for independent creative work in the field of music-making. Subjects like Techniques of Electronic Music, Techniques of Applied Music,<\/em> Electronic Music Basics, Harmony, Polyphony, Music Forms and Styles, Aspects of Contemporary Music, Music Informatics <\/em>and Solfeggio<\/em> offer theoretical and practical knowledge that deepen and broaden the understanding of creative processes in music. Piano, Conducting, Score reading<\/em> and Music History<\/em> as mandatory subjects, supplemented with the basics in fine art, complete the students’ creative development as composers.<\/p>\n

Among the elective subjects, it is possible to choose those that deepen or broaden acquired knowledge, as well as those that provide new content. The elective module of pedagogical subjects introduces students to basic theoretical and practical knowledge in music pedagogy.<\/p>\n

The study programme is completed after passing all the required exams, and producing a diploma paper, as well as passing an exam before the committee in which the student’s final work is performed and presented – a work created in the last year of study.<\/p>\n

Special attention is devoted to individual classes with students of composition. Students can also work in the electronic studio which is central to the study of music technologies and specialist areas for future composers of electronic music and applied composition. The electronic studio is equipped with cutting edge equipment for synthesis and sound design, recording, music production and interactive performances of electronic works through the use of the Kyma platform.<\/p>\n

The Department also attaches great importance to public performances of students’ works throughout the study programme. Final works in the form of students’ orchestral compositions are performed publicly by the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, the Croatian Radio Television Symphony Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestra of the University of Zagreb Academy of Music.<\/p>\n

Music Theory<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Within the Integrated Undergraduate and Graduate University Study Programme of Music Theory,<\/em> students acquire basic and advanced knowledge and skills in the field of theoretical disciplines such as Harmony, Polyphony, Conducting, Basics of Composition, Musical Forms and Styles, History of Music<\/em> and practical disciplines such as Piano, Score Reading, and Choir. <\/em>The Pedagogical Subjects module introduces students to theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of music pedagogy.<\/p>\n

Among elective subjects, students can choose those that deepen or broaden their existing knowledge, as well as those that develop new knowledge.<\/p>\n

The study programme is completed after passing all the required exams, as well as by passing the diploma final exam in which the students publicly present their thesis to the committee.<\/p>\n

<\/div>COMPETENCIES GAINED IN THE STUDY PROGRAMMES<\/strong><\/p>\n

Upon completing the Integrated Undergraduate and Graduate University Study of Composition,<\/strong> Master of Music can work as an independent artist in the field of music creation, which, in addition to composing, includes orchestration and arrangement.<\/p>\n

They can lead amateur choirs, orchestras and similar ensembles, as well as engage in other appropriate musical activities. They can be ballet or choir accompanists in professional art institutions.\u00a0 In the wider area of the music industry, they can work in music publishing (computer notation, editing), music production and distribution, music management, and also in the media as editors, reporters or presenters. After completing the pedagogical module they are qualified to work in primary and secondary music schools as teachers of music theory. They can also work as freelance musicians in the field of music creation.<\/p>\n

After completing the integrated undergraduate and graduate study of Music Theory<\/strong>, Master of Music is qualified to work as teacher of music theory in primary and secondary music schools.<\/p>\n

They can lead amateur choirs, orchestras and similar ensembles, and engage in other appropriate musical activities. In the wider area of the music industry, they can work in music publishing (computer notation, editing), music production and distribution, music management, and in the media as editors, reporters or presenters.<\/p>\n
